Our Client is actively seeking an experienced Research Assistant for their location in Richmond, CA!!
This position will assist Scientists/Engineers in research and development of new catalysts and fuels production processes.
This individual is responsible for building, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining catalyst test and characterization equipment (e.g., high-pressure bench scale reactor units); and managing data using different computer software, such as daily run data and analytical results; running the units and key associated process equipment using a process control software; recognizing and troubleshooting abnormal operation conditions and maintaining a safe working environment. Additional job responsibilities include preparation of samples for analyses and support for maintenance/calibration of analysis equipment.
According to project needs the individual conducts laboratory wet chemistry work including solution preparation, basic inorganic and organic synthesis, filtering and drying using standard lab techniques, as well as specialized procedures and equipment. The laboratory work may also include materials synthesis and samples transfer under vacuum/controlled atmosphere conditions. The individual should be able to handle air /moisture sensitive catalytic materials and hazardous reagents, such as mineral acids and bases, compounds containing nickel and vanadium, and materials containing polynuclear aromatics.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining a clean and safe laboratory. This includes lab housekeeping, maintaining chemical inventory and keeping appropriate safety records
- Operating, maintaining, and modifying existing bench scale reactor units and analytical equipment.
- Carrying out thermal and flow calibrations.
- Setting up new equipment, as needed, including working with the Facilities shops.
- Preparing oil samples for daily analyses.
- Handling catalyst samples, including loading reactors.
- Managing process and analytical data to ensure efficient and reliable operations
- Carrying out wet chemistry lab work using standard techniques and procedures
- Making basic calculations related to data workup.
- Maintaining detailed records documenting the work (written/computer)
- Capability to work as a contributing and valued Research Team member.
- Working effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
Required Qualifications:
- BS degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or physical sciences.
- Strong mechanical skills
- Experience with a small-scale reactor equipment and operations. Experience with high pressure operations and petroleum processing is a plus for this job
- Experience with analysis equipment (gas chromatography, elemental analysis, density analysis) is desirable
- Ability to monitor process and analytical data to ensure smooth reliable reactor unit operations
- Demonstrated ability to conduct wet chemistry operations and handle air /moisture sensitive catalytic materials and hazardous reagents
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize, plan and organize multiple tasks and assignments from multiple researchers.
- Experience with basic computer software (Outlook, Word, Excel)
