Technical Editor
Working independently, prepare a wide variety of moderately complex technical documents for the Department. Interacts with subject matter experts to write and edit reports, plans, procedures, presentations and correspondence according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, terminology, consistency and tone. Work independently or collaborate effectively as part of a larger team with focus on service, reliability and quality. Actively participate in the planning, development and optimization of internal document preparation processes and tools. Apply technical knowledge gained in environmental, waste management and radiation protection to support compliance with prescribed orders, applicable laws and regulations, and best management practices. Activities will require the exercise of broad knowledge of department operations, and judgment.
Responsibilities:
- Provide writing and editing support for reports, plans, procedures, presentations and correspondence according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, terminology, consistency and tone. This involves interacting effectively with subject matter experts within the Department.
- Apply broad knowledge of scientific or engineering concepts to communicate moderately complex technical and nontechnical information in publications. Gain additional technical knowledge and skills of environmental protection and restoration, waste management, and radiation protection concepts and practices through ongoing education, training, and/or on-the job initiative.
- Proofread all work products with an extremely high degree of accuracy.
- Work independently and as part of a larger team.
- Maintain correspondence system to track compliance submissions to the Agency and various regulatory agencies to responses from these organizations. Completeness, accuracy and consistency are required to ensure a complete and searchable record.
- Provide schedules and costs estimates for major publication projects. Manage project activities efficiently and effectively, consistent with approved work scopes, schedules and budgets.
- Apply knowledge of computing software for work processing and development of tables, figures and presentations needed to produce high quality documents in the shortest possible time.
- Assist in the development and optimization of internal processes and tools for preparation of documents.
- Provide additional technical support as needed.
Qualifications
Essential:
- A bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or a technical field such as science or engineering, and a minimum of 5 years related experience in technical and non-technical writing, editing and production.
- Broad knowledge of professional writing and editing concepts and practices with demonstrated ability to apply these concepts to highly technical and moderately complex projects.
- Proven ability to translate technical terms and facts into easily understood language for a wide variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
- Broad knowledge of computing software for work processing and development of tables, figures and presentations needed to produce high quality documents in the shortest possible time.
- Ability to proofread with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to interact efficiently with staff at all levels and to work cooperatively as a member of a team
- Sound knowledge of all the processes that contribute to the production of a published document.
- Ability to produce results in a timely fashion and to charge priorities when necessary.
- Must be able to work onsite during normal business hours.
