Freelance Features Writer
Who We’re Looking For:
Digital Trends is seeking an experienced freelance reporter to join the Features wing of our Editorial team. The ideal freelance candidate will have a background in journalism, an eye for compelling stories, and an allergy to re-hashing articles from other publications. We’re looking for fresh perspectives and original reporting on how big-picture technological trends are reshaping the human experience.
What you’ll do:
If hired, you will be responsible for developing and pitching original story ideas, taking assignments, and coordinating with the rest of the Digital Trends Editorial team to ensure that your pieces are of the highest possible quality before publication.
The volume of articles you produce will largely be up to you, but we’re looking for someone who can produce at least one feature story per week. Typically, these will range from around 700 words at their shortest to around 3,000 words at longest. Topics will vary, but will typically fall under the umbrella of science and technology.
Qualifications/Skills:
The most important skill you must possess is the ability to tell a good story — be it written, visual, spoken, or otherwise. As long as you know how to weave a compelling narrative that people will enjoy and share with others, then you’ll have 75 percent of the job covered.
The other 25 percent is interviewing, researching, fact checking, getting scoops, and meeting deadlines (and we can’t stress that last part enough). You’ll need to be comfortable calling people, conducting interviews, digging deep into topics you may or may not be familiar with, juggling multiple projects at once, and handing in drafts on time.
General expertise in science/technology subjects is crucial for this role, although specialists are encouraged to apply as well. If you are particularly well-versed in a particular subject (say, synthetic biology, mass surveillance, or agriculture, for example) we’d still love to hear from you.
Most of the Digital Trends editorial machine runs on WordPress and Asana, so if you have experience with either platform, that’s a plus. These skills aren’t essential, though. We’ll happily train the right candidate.
Also, while not necessarily a requirement, having a good on-camera presence is also a big plus. Same goes for photography skills. If you can shoot good photos/videos to accompany your written work, definitely let us know.
*Note: While these might seem like fairly easily-fulfillable criteria, only elite applicants need apply. We’re looking for top-tier talent for this position, and consideration will only be given to those with a demonstrable history of professional writing — preferably for reputable, well-known publications.
How to Apply:
To apply, please send a succinct cover letter, your resume (PDF format), and links to any published work that you believe demonstrates your storytelling abilities.
