Contract Writer/Reporter
Based in Bethesda, MD, Education Week, America’s most trusted source of K-12 education news, analysis, and opinion, is a digital-first news operation with a track record in print and online journalism that is dedicated to raising the level of awareness and understanding among professionals and the public of important issues in American education.
Education Week’s parent company, Editorial Projects in Education (EPE), is a nonprofit media organization that serves the nation’s leading K-12 policymakers, educators, researchers, marketers, and other influencers with informed, independent, and highly-respected journalism and research, with the goal of improving U.S. K-12 education.
This is a 9-month temporary contract reporter/writer position that will help us fill gaps in our coverage, especially around news, trends, and best practices in educational technology and an emerging area called “learning environments.”
The position requires solid reporting and writing skills; a curiosity about developments in K-12 education; the ability to use social media and other tools to engage audience members; and an interest in data-driven storytelling and analysis. We need someone digitally savvy, conscientious, and solution-focused, who thrives in the fast-paced and ever-changing environment that is digital news, and who is willing to take on multiple tasks as assigned.
The position will require at least 30 hours of work per week, and compensation will be an hourly wage of $40-$45, based on skills and experience. Working out of our Bethesda, MD office is preferred, but we will consider all candidates that apply.
Qualifications and Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree, 1-3 years related experience in a news/media/information organization.
• Knowledge of the field of K-12 education or a hunger to learn more about it; dedicated to the mission of Education Week and edweek.org.
• Strong news judgment; ability to recognize news and trends in education and conceptualize appropriate stories and other content with an eye to audiences of district leaders and educational technology leaders.
• Skilled research, reporting, and writing abilities. • Curiosity about reader analytics and the ability to use data about audience trends to steer content.
• Strong desire and ability to embrace and learn new technologies.
