Motorcycle taxis are immensely popular and serve as the lifeblood of many cities in Africa, but they are extremely unsafe and disorganized. At the click of a button, SafeBoda provides a safe, more convenient, mobile-first transportation platform for Africa's booming young population.
On the high-frequency use of our transportation service, SafeBoda is providing value to consumers, our drivers, and passengers, with additional financial services, payments, and other on-demand services to keep Africa moving forward. We have a passionate and highly engaged team and we are looking to quickly grow it to speed-up the organization's growth and make sure we can revolutionize transportation and cities.
At the heart of Poblenou (the centre of innovation and technology in Barcelona), and 600m away from the beach, SafeBoda opened late 2018, the Barcelona Tech Hub.
We are a venture-funded company, just completing a Series B financing, that is already having a huge impact for millions in East Africa.
In November 2018, SafeBoda was announced among the 2018 AppsAfrica award winners at an event held in Cape Town, South Africa. SafeBoda beat four startups from Nigeria and South Africa to become the Best African App .
Our Product Team
Operating in Uganda, Kenya and in the next few months also in Nigeria and Tanzania, SafeBoda is expanding rapidly.
In order to develop the best products, we believe that diversity and shared knowledge are key, that's why currently we have 2 offices for our Product Team:
HQ in Kampala with CTO and Head of Product based there
Barcelona Tech Hub
Any new candidate can decide where to live and work while contributing to our mission. We try to ensure that new hires go to Kampala for some weeks to experience the product regardless of where they will be based.

Right now we are looking for a VP of Engineering who will be the head of SafeBoda's Engineering function. You will lead the continued growth of the engineering teams with an emphasis on fostering a strong engineering culture.

As a VP of Engineering at Safeboda you will:
Lead, mentor and inspire a distributed engineering team to perform at a high level and deliver world-class products
Recruit, develop, and scale a talented technology team committed to developing innovative solutions aligned with the company's business model, values, and vision
Lead the development, establishment, and application of measures and best practices for people growth and development
Create a positive culture to maximize productivity and minimize attrition
Utilize performance review cycles to reiterate expectations and discuss methods to achieve and exceed them
Act as a strong advocate for quality in the product development process for software engineering
Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities of Engineering
Plan and implement systems and processes to fulfil the mission and the goals of the Engineering efficiently and effectively
Establish and maintain relevant controls and feedback systems to monitor and ensure the success of the team
Partner with the CPO to align long term technical strategy with product strategy
Main requirements
At least 10 years of overall engineering experience
At least 5 years of experience leading engineering teams
Degree in Computer Science or any related field
Experience managing successful engineering teams (remote-based a plus) including hiring/terminations and performance management
Knowledge of current trends in software design, architecture and web services
Works comfortably in a collaborative setting, and is comfortable working with executive leadership
Willing to travel frequently to our engineering hubs
Fluent in English
