News Reporter
Bustle is seeking a part-time reporter who’s hungry to go beyond blogging to report on the issues in news and politics that affect our audience of millennial women and gender nonconforming people. This role involves reporting out insightful angles on the news of the day that go deeper than an aggregated news brief. The reporter will cover a broad range of items pegged to the general news cycle, including in the areas of reproductive rights, gender equality, women in politics, crime, tech and business news, and more.
The ideal candidate is able to deliver reported pieces and analysis on tight deadlines; is comfortable picking up the phone to do daily reporting and break news; and has a keen eye for spotting the Bustle angle within a national news story. And like any member of a news team, this person will also pick up breaking news briefs as required.
The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist with a track record of producing engaging stories, a positive attitude, and a collaborative spirit. This reporter will be remote and report to the Deputy News Editor for four seven-hour shifts a week.
Candidates must have the following availability (EST):
Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Responsibilities
File at least two reported, 600 word pieces per day
Juggle multiple articles at a time, with the ability to switch between topics at the drop of a hat
Identify fresh angles on top stories of the day that go beyond straight news
Analyze and explain complex issues in a way that resonates with Bustle’s audience
Follow Bustle style and turn in crystal-clear, conversational copy
Incorporate photos, videos, tweets, and memes naturally into news stories
Jump into breaking news coverage when required
Requirements
3-5 years of reporting experience, specifically working for a news publication
Have a track record of breaking news and producing dynamic stories
Excellent communication skills in maintaining sources and corresponding with editors
Equally comfortable pitching ideas and taking assignments
Have a great network of go-to sources and industry experts
Ability to work at a speed competitive with other news outlets
Unwavering journalistic integrity and ethical standards
Be very conversant in US politics and current affairs
Have a deep understanding of Bustle’s voice and mission
