Front-end Developer
At Hitachi Vantara (Full-time), in Lisbon, Portugal
Expires at: 2019-10-08
(Hello. Corporate forced us to publish this ad as is, even though it's the most generic job description you'll ever see. Luckily, they did not mention anything about adding stuff to it (or maybe they did and we just don't care). So we, your helpful friends and soon to be co-workers from Engineering decided to help you out. Let's start with the company description.)
Hitachi Vantara combines technology, intellectual property and industry knowledge to deliver data-managing solutions that help enterprises improve their customers' experiences, develop new revenue streams, and lower the costs of business.
(What we love about the beautiful piece of text above is that it has so many words and it still fails spectacularly at giving you the slightest clue of what we do. Here's our take:
Hitachi Vantara builds products and platforms that power solutions in Big Data, IoT and more generically Data Management, Analysis and Visualization space. Some quick examples:
We helped the state of Andhra Pradesh become a Smart State, improving the lives of the citizens of one of the most populated states in India
We helped the German Federal Police analyze their existing data to improve public safety
We helped the Loma Linda University Health Care create better analysis tools for their patients, improving patient care )
The Role
This position will work as a member of the Software Engineering team to develop and maintain parts of the Pentaho Community and Enterprise software suite.
(As we said before, Pentaho is an Open Source Big Data Analytics platform. We help build it. By joining us, you'll work as part of a lean, agile organization and you'll be able to leverage your tech skills to build awesome User Interfaces for our product lines)
Develop and test efficient and intuitive user interfaces using HTML/CSS/Javascript
(yeah, I know, shocker, right? Who would've thought we'd want that from a frontend developer?)
Work in a multi-national environment with close ties to our other engineering locations in the USA and UK
Assist the technical support team in the isolation and resolution of customer issues
Author developer documentation and participate in the development of end-user documentation
Mentor and advise junior team members
Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical members of the project team
Support consultants, partners, and the open-source community
Simultaneously handle multiple tasks and projects
Your profile: Reliable, self-motivated, and focused on high-quality delivery of work products; Skilled in navigating the dynamics of working as part of a team; Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a team environment; Personal drive to be the best at their job
Main requirements
Good knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript and associated frameworks (React, Angular,
JQuery, Underscore, Backbone, ...)
(Another shocker! And it looks like someone was reading about Javascript frameworks... We're converging to React as our main framework so if you don't know Backbone that is
probably fine)
A strong geek side and a like for Open source projects
(We managed to get the geek requirement in. That's mandatory. You should know why
Christmas = Halloween and find it funny even after you heard it 25 times.)
Ability to quickly understand technical and business requirements and be able to translate into
technical implementation
(Because that's what a developer does and that's why we pay you.)
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field
(This would be nice, because it means someone has taught you (or at least tried to) some SW Engineering concepts which *might* be useful.)
Oral and written English is a must
(We work a lot with the other engineering groups in the organization, so being able to speak, write and understand English is pretty important. And for the record, just because you can order beers in English while you're on vacations doesn't mean you can engage in a technical conversation. Sometimes the technical conversation is followed by beers, but that's a different situation.)
2+ years of experience
(We don't feel like teaching you everything)
Nice to have
Understanding of agile or other iterative software development methodologies
(We use agile, mainly SCRUM, sometimes Kanban when that is a better solution. Knowing
the process will help)
Other languages knowledge also useful (As you know or should know, knowing several languages and paradigms leads to better problem-solving)
Perks
Health plan (extendable to spouses/children)
Annual bonus
Mobile phone and communication plan
Gym reimbursement
(We had to ask for this one since we have a tradition of people bringing in cakes to celebrate pretty much everything. We're the fittest, most handsome engineering team around. Trust us!)
Flexible schedules
Informal and relaxed work environment
Lots of growth opportunities
Pension Fund
(If you ever get to retire, then the company will pay you something for as long as you live)
Life Insurance
(Because sometimes the code wins, but at least your family will get good money)
We are an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability
status.
